Gourikwa Reserve offers self catering cottages in a resort setting in Gouritsmond in the Mossel Bay area of the Garden Route. Accommodation comprises of 30 self catering units of in various configurations such as 2 sleeper, 4 sleeper and 6 sleeper. We can cater for up to 90 people. The estate was proclaimed a private nature reserve in 1995. It is the largest private nature reserve along the South African coastline. It extends over 2455 hectares (6066 acres) and stretches 5 km along the Indian Ocean. The reserve is fully fenced along its 15 km perimeter and is only accessible via two gated entrances. Well preserved ancient fish traps and shell middens are situated along the reserve's coastline and pay testament to our great heritage. The fish traps date back to the Later Stone Age people (Khoikhoi) who roamed the coastline about 2000 years ago. A walk up Buffelskop (212 m - the highest point on the reserve) offers a magnificent view of the entire coastline, the light house and a vast undulating inland landscape. There is a swimming pool for guests to enjoy, a lounge and bar area with a TV showing select DSTV channels, as well as a lovely courtyard area. A small tuckshop is at Reception selling items such as wood, blitz, milk and ice, amongst other small items. Gouritsmond is roughly 40kms from Mossel Bay, where a range of stores are available for all your self catering supplies.

Gouritsmond has one well-stocked general dealer, also providing fuel, one liquor store and one restaurant. The area is very popular for fishing (permits obtainable locally). The beach offers a good bathing area plus a stretch of rocky beach with lovely pools and a tide pool for swimming. An easy hiking trail has been laid out around the lagoon. It is safe to go for long walks. Gouritsmond offers a prolific bird population, including a breeding area for the endangered black African oystereater. Owls are common and kiewiets (plovers) and guineafowls are common visitors in the garden. (Bird book on bookshelf). Rabbits graze about in the early morning and tortoises are common - watch out for them when driving! Gouritsmond is 45 km away from Mossel Bay, featuring various attractions such as historical sites, well-equipped shops and restaurants and cage diving with sharks. The Diaz Museum, the prehistoric cave at Punt and the Post Office Tree are on your must-visit list. Mossel Bay is also the beginning of the famous Garden Route. George is 100 km from Gouritsmond. Whatever you choose to do, you will find the peace and tranquillity of Gouritsmond a precious experience.

Gouritsmond, Gouritz

Gourits was named after the Gouriqua Khoikhoi people that lived in the area. The Gourits River is the principal river in the southern Cape. The N2 national road and the railway line both cross the Gourits River over a gorge 65m deep and 75m wide. Both sides of the ravine are covered with aloes that look beautiful when they flower.

At the Gourits Rivier Mond (Gourits river-mouth) there is a caravan park and a camping site, and also a hotel. Fishing in the area is good and fish is abundant in the area. Famous fishing spots include "The Fisheries", "Bull Point" and "Kaap Vacca". Leervis, white steenbras, kob, gunter, and elf are found here. The kabeljou will sometimes swim into the estuaries to feed on the mullet.

At Gourits Mond swimming is safe but the backwash can sometimes be a bit treacherous and the water can be cold. Gourits Mond is recommended for the powerboat fisherman and a launch ramp is available.

Gourits Mond has the advantage that it is close to Mossel Bay, a bustling city, in case you need to go some shopping, but yet far enough to be a tranquil setting.

Verification is done automatically at the time of an enquiry. It is at the property’s discretion whether to offer the saving for a telephonic enquiry. (As you have no means to verify the membership number, it is advisable to get them to do a formal enquiry so they can be verified).
If the property is currently running a "Special" greater than 15% then the "Special" price will apply. (No further savings needs to be offered). EXCEPT in the case where the "Special" is lower than 15%. In that case the 15% will apply.
