... Arniston Seaside Cottages provide self catering accommodation in Arniston on the Overberg / Whale Coast in the Western Cape. The picturesque fishing village of Arniston is a popular subject for artists and movie-makers. It is here that the southern right whale can be spotted migrating to and from the Antarctic. Where dunes embroider endless beaches and rustic white-washed cottages overlook a deep blue sea. It's out of this world. Take a leisurely drive along the N2, over the magnificent Arniston, a fishing village two centuries old. Arniston is also known to some as waenhuiskrans, the incredible tidal cave, chiselled by time and the sea out of the sand-stone cliff. Close to the beaches are Arniston Seaside Cottages, a cluster of impressive luxury thatch roof cottages, emphasising the unique personality of Arniston itself. They can accommodate groups from a honeymoon couple to a party of 80. The self catering cottages have quarry tile floors, reed ceilings and open log fireplaces. The modern kitchens are fully equipped with everything from a microwave oven to a tin opener. The relaxed ambience is enhanced by cosy bedrooms and light and airy living areas, complemented with colourful Cape cane and pine furnishings. Some balconies have wonderful views of the sea and the surrounding dunes. So much to do in Arniston: You can wander down to the slipway and bargain with local fisherman for fresh fish, or even catch your own Galjoen or Steenbras. Just a stone's throw away are rock-pools where you can gather your own oysters or other delectable shellfish. You can cook your catch over a braai in the privacy of your own thatched lapa. The self catering cottages are serviced every day allowing you to relax and fit into the casual lifestyle of Arniston.

Arniston

The tranquil fishing village with two names, Arniston is on the north-east of Cape Agulhas in Marcus Bay and known as one of the world's best hideaways. It was officially named Waenhuiskrans (wagon house cave) by early settlers after a nearby cavern large enough to house their wagons. This cave is easy to explore for sea treasures at low tide.

The village became unofficially known as "Arniston" after the nearby tragedy that sunk a British troopship of the same name. The village offers some wonderful opportunities to explore unusual rock formations and other examples of natural erosion.

Several of the beautifully restored, white-washed thatched cottages of Kassiesbaai, the oldest part of Arniston, were declared national monuments and the area is thus popular with artists and photographers. Remnants of prehistoric fish traps are visible along the coast and serve as memorials of a vanished people called strandlopers ("beach walkers").

Self catering accommodation in Arniston is very popular, with guests returning time after time. The tranquil setting is popular with local and overseas guests alike.

Arniston is flanked by two nature reserves - the well-known, ecologically important De Hoop Nature Reserve and the smaller De Mond Nature Reserve.

Arniston, also known as Waenhuiskrans, is a charming fishing village in the Western Cape of South Africa. It offers stunning natural beauty, historical significance, and a tranquil atmosphere.

Here are five things to see and do in and around Arniston:

1. Waenhuiskrans Cave:
Scenic Cave: Accessible at low tide, this large sea cave is a must-see. The name Waenhuiskrans means "wagon house cliff" in Afrikaans, referring to the cave's size, which is large enough to accommodate a wagon and oxen.
Natural Beauty: Enjoy the stunning coastal views and the unique rock formations around the cave. It's an excellent spot for photography and exploring tidal pools.

2. Arniston Beach:
Pristine Shoreline: Arniston Beach is known for its white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters, making it perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and leisurely walks.
Fishing Village: Experience the local fishing culture by watching the colorful fishing boats and interacting with the friendly fishermen.

3. Kassiesbaai:
Historic Fisherman's Village: Visit this charming village with its whitewashed, thatched-roof cottages. Kassiesbaai is a national heritage site and offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the local fishing community.
Cultural Experience: Explore the village on foot, chat with the residents, and perhaps purchase handmade crafts and souvenirs.

4. Arniston Monument:
Historical Significance: This monument commemorates the wreck of the British East Indiaman ship "Arniston" in 1815, after which the village is named. The shipwreck is one of South Africa's worst maritime disasters, and the monument honors those who lost their lives.
Memorial Plaque: Read the inscriptions and reflect on the historical event while enjoying the surrounding scenery.

5. De Mond Nature Reserve:
Biodiversity: Located near Arniston, De Mond Nature Reserve is a protected area that offers diverse flora and fauna, including numerous bird species. It's a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Hiking and Trails: Enjoy the walking trails through the reserve, which provide beautiful views of the estuary, salt marshes, and coastal dunes. The reserve is also ideal for picnicking and fishing.

These attractions highlight the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical significance of Arniston, making it a worthwhile destination for visitors exploring the Western Cape.

Why the $elect Stays initiative?

  1. Encourage and boost local tourism through making holidays more affordable.
This is achieved by offering locals a 15% saving. The same 15% that would have left our shores had it been paid as commission to an International Booking site.
  2. Reduce the dependancy on large International Booking sites.
This is achieved by building up a loyal following of verified users who we will market to on an exclusive and regular basis to maximise the opportunity.
  3. Ensure more money stays within local tourism to benefit us all.
It is no secret that the large International Booking sites pay no or very little tax to South Africa or Namibia. By taking back a little more control we boost our own economy, and in particular, our local tourism. This is good for us all.
Read this article on how the Australian holiday accommodation sector is suffering in the same way.
  4. Exclusive.
Only listings on Stays can participate, which means less competition for bookings.

Terms & Conditions

  1. The property (you) must offer the 15% saving to all verified members
  2. Verification is done automatically at the time of an enquiry. It is at the property’s discretion whether to offer the saving for a telephonic enquiry. (As you have no means to verify the membership number, it is advisable to get them to do a formal enquiry so they can be verified).
  3. If the property is currently running a "Special" greater than 15% then the "Special" price will apply. (No further savings needs to be offered). EXCEPT in the case where the "Special" is lower than 15%. In that case the 15% will apply.
Example: A property offering a 10% discount, must offer an additional 5% discount to valid members - so they get a total 15% saving.
  4. The property must offer valid members the saving all year round. (Properties that pick and chose in which seasons to participate run the risk of being removed from the programme completely. Allowing selective participation defeats the integrity of this initiative).
  5. The property must not inflate the price before the 15% is applied. Prices displayed should be the rack rate. (The official or advertised price of a room).
  6. The property must honour any bookings made while the property was participating as a $elect Stays property.
  7. The property must honour the agreement and the spirit in which the initiative is designed to benefit local tourism.
