On entering the small town of Genadendal you are welcomed by a timeless feeling. This is owing to the fact that the town is almost 300 years old. Genadendal, which means the Valley of Grace, was established in 1738 by the missionary George Schmidt, who was sent by the German Moravian Church to convert the local Khoi people.
One of the main focal points of the town is the museum complex, a National Cultural Treasure which consist of 25 museums. The old buildings are dotted amongst ancient oaks. One of the oldest mission printing presses in South Africa could be found in the Old Print Shop. The Water Mill offers bread made from stone-ground flour and baked in open-air ovens. And visitors are urged to taste the rooibos drink they serve at reception. Other activities include enjoying the solitude in the grainery, visiting the pottery or watching how knives are made by hand. You can stroll in the gardens, picnic in the shade of the 200-year old pear tree or book a home cooked meal. The Moravian Church is known for its talented choir and brass band performances.
Visit during the Greyton Classis classical music festival, and if you are energetic you could tackle the Genadendal Hiking Trail, a 25,3 km long circular route. Overnight facilities are available on the farm Die Hoek and a permit can be obtained from the Vrolijkheid Nature Conservation Station.

Terms & Conditions
- The property (you) must offer the 15% saving to all verified members
- Verification is done automatically at the time of an enquiry. It is at the property’s discretion whether to offer the saving for a telephonic enquiry. (As you have no means to verify the membership number, it is advisable to get them to do a formal enquiry so they can be verified).
- If the property is currently running a "Special" greater than 15% then the "Special" price will apply. (No further savings needs to be offered). EXCEPT in the case where the "Special" is lower than 15%. In that case the 15% will apply.
Example: A property offering a 10% discount, must offer an additional 5% discount to valid members - so they get a total 15% saving. - The property must offer valid members the saving all year round. (Properties that pick and chose in which seasons to participate run the risk of being removed from the programme completely. Allowing selective participation defeats the integrity of this initiative).
- The property must not inflate the price before the 15% is applied. Prices displayed should be the rack rate. (The official or advertised price of a room).
- The property must honour any bookings made while the property was participating as a $elect Stays property.
- The property must honour the agreement and the spirit in which the initiative is designed to benefit local tourism.
